Congress Passes U.S. Marshals Commemorative Coin Act

March 21, 2012
Press Release

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed H. R. 886, the United States Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act, by a vote of 409 yeas to 2 nays. The bill requires the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the 225th anniversary of the establishment of the Nation's first Federal law enforcement agency, the United States Marshals Service. H.R. 886 was passed by the Senate with unanimous consent on March 15, 2012, and will now head to President Barack Obama for his signature.

U.S. Marshals are appointed by the President and direct the activities of the 94 federal judicial districts across the nation, with one Marshal for each district. The current U.S. Marshal for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands is Frank Leon Guerrero, who was nominated by President Barack Obama, at Congresswoman Bordallo’s recommendation, and confirmed by the Senate in 2010.

“The U.S. Marshals Service plays an essential role in the protection of the federal justice system,” Congresswoman Bordallo said today. “The commemorative coins produced by this act will highlight the lasting legacy of our Nation's oldest Federal law enforcement agency. It is important that we continue to recognize them for their service.”
