Congresswoman Bordallo Responds to Senator San Nicolas
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today responded to Senator Mike San Nicolas’ letter regarding his request to the Federal Trade Commission to investigate gas prices on Guam, as well as the FTC’s response to his request.
“It is unfortunate that Senator San Nicolas was unable to make a convincing argument to the FTC regarding alleged gasoline price gauging on Guam. I leveraged my seniority in Washington to arrange face to face meetings between him and senior FTC officials as well as House Committee staff.
“Senator San Nicolas made his case directly to the FTC, and it is misguided for him to try to shift blame to me after receiving an unfavorable response. Additionally, no such letter he alludes to from me to the pertinent House committees would have affected the outcome of the FTC’s January 9, 2018 decision.
During his meetings with FTC officials and House Committee staff, Senator San Nicolas was informed that based on the information he provided, the issues he raised regarding the fluctuation of gas prices are usually successfully adjudicated at the state or local level. In light of the FTC’s decision, Senator San Nicolas should utilize his role as a senator in the Guam Legislature to push for local reviews of these alleged violations.”
