FEMA Awards $1.95 Million to Guam Community College Building 200 Hardening Project

July 10, 2013
Press Release
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a $1.95 million grant for the Guam Community College (GCC) Building 200 Hardening Project.

This funding supports the structural retrofit of the Guam Community College Building 200 to better withstand weather-related events such as tropical storms and typhoons.

“These funds will help the Guam Community College improve its infrastructure to better withstand typhoons and other wind-related events,” said Congresswoman Bordallo. “Typhoons can cause millions of dollars in damage, depending on the severity of the storm, so it is critical that infrastructure on our island be well-equipped ahead of time to prevent and minimize damage to our valuable property, especially our schools.”

Dr. Mary Okada, President of Guam Community College, said: “This grant is allowing GCC to expand and fortify Building 200 in order to make the building that houses our growing Education Department as strong and sustainable as the programs in it. The project will transform a single-story Butler building into a two-story concrete structure that is able to withstand typhoon winds and impact from storm debris, and provide an additional 1500 square feet for classrooms and labs. We sincerely thank Congresswoman Bordallo's office and FEMA for this grant award. It is a great investment in education on our island.”
