Statement on Guam Legislature’s Resolution 242
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today regarding the Guam Legislature’s passage of Resolution 34-242.
“Resolving war claims for our manamko’ has long been a priority for me, and while legislation enacted into law last year was not perfect, it represented decades of work by me and each of my predecessors. I have always stated that using Section 30 funds above levels collected in 2014 and remitted to Guam was not the final effort, but it was the only way to overcome strong Republican objections in Congress.
“As I have stated since I first proposed this solution in 2012, including when war claims passed at the end of last year, our manamko’ deserve to be recognized for their sacrifices and patriotism to the United States as soon as possible. I have long sought and continue working to find an alternative that does not rely on excess Section 30 funds.
“With this resolution, the Legislature must now lend its full-throated support to my efforts in Congress to secure a suitable alternative funding source. I hope all GovGuam leaders agree with me that war claims must be paid in full.”
