Representing the People of Guam

USS Topeka to be Homeported on Guam

February 11, 2014
Press Release

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Navy’s shift in the homeport of the USS Topeka to Guam. The USS Topeka is a Los Angeles Class fast attack submarine with a crew of 173 sailors comprised of 16 officers and 157 enlisted. The USS Topeka was previously homeported in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The USS Topeka will be the fourth submarine homeported on Guam, joining the USS Chicago, USS Key West, and USS Oklahoma City.

“The Navy’s decision to homeport an additional fast attack submarine on Guam is another clear example of our island’s strategic location in the Asia Pacific region. This decision increases the number of submarines homeported on Guam from three to four and will add to the Navy’s capabilities to respond to a wide variety of contingencies in our region. The Navy’s homeporting of the USS Topeka on Guam is also an indication of the broader implications of the rebalance strategy.  The rebalance is not just about the realignment of Marines but about reallocating resources and assets for all the services in our region. The Navy has been an important member of our community, and I look forward to welcoming these sailors to Guam.”
